Teen Vision Quest

AGES            13 – 18
DATES          August 2 – 10, 2008
LOCATION   central Virginia mountains

In first nations’ cultures a boy could not be considered an adult until he successfully completed a Vision Quest and thereby came to understand what he could contribute to his people. For any of today’s boys and girls on the verge of adulthood, and especially for teenagers who feel lost or out of place, it is a transformative way to attain a sense of direction through their own initiative.

The teen vision quests are a modification of traditional quests. Safety is given first priority, particularly during the solo period when bountiful water, sufficient food, and protection from the elements are provided for the well being of the seekers. They sit removed from the supporting camp during the solo time, but close enough that they would not have any difficulty returning if the need arose. To further ensure their safety a staff person of their choosing checks on them several times during their solo period. This period lasts from one to three days, depending upon the individual quester’s calling, age, and capability. During the preparation and reincorporation stages some time is allotted for games and recreation in order to keep the experience more relaxed and enjoyable. The presence and support of family members is also welcomed.

Participants in teen vision quests should feel a personal calling to participate, rather than simply being required to do so by their guardians. We ask that potential participants and their parents consult with vision quest staff ahead of time in order to ensure this program will be suitable for them. Parents of interested youth should arrange a complimentary in-person meeting or conference call between them, the staff, and their child well before the program begins. Please contact us to answer any questions and to arrange a consultation.

Fee: $860

“Look deep into nature and then you will understand everything better.”
  --Einstein

This program is led by Stephen Sylvan Willig, who has himself completed six formal Vision Quests at critical times in his own life. He has sought his answers both through very traditional quests facilitated by a Lakota ceremonial leader, as well as through quests led by more contemporary teachers who have modified the ancient ways for modern Americans. Sylvan has found his Quests to be the most transformative experiences of his life, and he strives to continue to live his Visions each day.
Sylvan has been serving youth professionally for nearly twenty years in varying capacities. He is the founder of Sylvan’s Youth Education Service which provides outdoor experiential educational programs in the areas of Woodslore, American Indian studies, Environmental Education, and Deep Learning. He has a heartfelt calling to bring youth closer to nature, and to thereby help them develop into mature adults who can bring benefit to the planet.
