REGISTRATION

  • If you feel you or your child may called to participate in a Virginia vision quest contact us to arrange a free phone consultation with Sylvan Willig. The purpose of this consultation is to ensure that this program will be right for the participant. If it seems it will be, you will be sent registration materials.

  • Fees for the teen vision quest are $860; for the adult vision quest are $950. Your space will be reserved upon receipt of a non-refundable deposit of 40% of the program’s cost. The balance of payment is due two weeks before the quest begins. Work exchange or barter is sometimes available to help defray some of the cost of the vision quest for those lacking the finances to pay the full amount. If you contribute more than the regular fee you help make such exchanges possible.

PREPARATION

  • Upon registration you will be sent suggestions for ways to prepare for your quest. Your quest should be seen as one of the major transformative experiences of your life, and a thorough preparation will help the process fulfill its potential. You will also be sent a list of things to bring and directions to the base camp. Plan to arrive by 5:00 pm on the first day. The program will start with dinner on that day and end with lunch on the last day.

SUPPORTERS

Some of you who quest will feel you need separation from family and friends for this process, and come alone. Others will welcome the chance for your loved ones to pray for you and support you at base camp. The choice is yours. You are welcome to bring one or two loved ones for your spiritual and physical support for any part of the program. Supporters should come with the intention of contributing in ceremony and prayer for the questers, preferably staying overnight. Visitors with the intention to just “check-in” for a short time can be more of a distraction to you than a support. Supporters are also welcome to stay at base camp to pray for you during your solo period, but will not have contact with you at that time. During the preparation and reincorporation periods at base camp, some activities will be designed for the participation of both questers and supporters, some will be intended only for questers, and some concurrent activities will be only for supporters. Supporters should also assist with some of the physical needs of the base camp. The charge for each supporter is $50 for each day and night the supporter will be at the program. The due dates for the balance of supporters’ fees are the same as for questers’ fees.

MEALS

  • The cooked meals will be tasty and healthy lacto-vegetarian. Meat cold cuts will also be available. We will try to accommodate special food needs, but may not be able if you have a particularly restrictive diet.

ACCOMMODATIONS

  • The quests are held at rustic Sugar Hollow camp at the foot of Shenandoah National Park, about fifteen miles west of historic Charlottesville. The primitive character of the camp helps us be more attuned to nature. Accommodations are shared cabins and canvas tents on platforms. You may also bring your own tent. Cots and bedding are not provided in the canvas tents, so you may need to bring your own sleeping pad and bedding for base camp. There are toilets and cold showers. We will also walk to a nearby mountain stream’s swimming hole to cool off and relax. For the solo period you should bring a compact lightweight sleeping pad, a sleeping bag, and a small (up to two person size) backpacking tent, or a small (up to 8’ x 8’) tarp and ground cloth for shelter.

Participants are encouraged to leave most of their home comforts behind in order to reawaken to nature and cut the ties to their old lives. Distractions such as cell phones and iPods are discouraged at base camp. There is time to cool off and play in a pleasant swimming hole in a nearby mountain stream, to journal, to walk, to live simply.
